Lawyers as Public Citizens

"As a public citizen, a lawyer should seek improvement of the law, access to the legal system, the administration of justice, and the quality of service rendered by the legal profession." Preamble to the Model Rules of Professional Conduct.

As we head into the holiday weekend,

As we consider our nation's 250th,

I ask the lawyers: Have you read the preamble to the ethics rules?

If not, or not recently, I encourage you to do so.

Beyond duties to our clients, colleagues, and the courts,

We have public duties, like the one quoted above.

A reminder that part of our profession is a calling.

A calling to uphold the legal process, improve the law, and help ensure access to and the administration of justice.
