Wisconsin Counsel

For a lot of people in my network, I’m not just one of several Wisconsin big law litigators they know—I’m the only one.

I’m based in Milwaukee, but my work takes me across the state—Madison included—and I’ve spent real time up north, too: Three Lakes (Oneida, Vilas, Forest Counties). Most firms my size don’t have a presence there, and most people up north have never had a reason to know a big law litigator.

That changes my role for a lot of my audience.

I’m not competing with ten other litigators for mindshare.

For someone running a business in a small Wisconsin town, sitting on a board, or just trying to figure out who to call when something goes wrong, I might be the only reference point they have for what big law litigation even looks like—or the only Wisconsin attorney their usual out-of-state counsel knows (which is often how I get connected).

That’s a strange kind of leverage, and I don’t think enough lawyers think about it this way.

The return on showing up consistently and being clear and useful in public isn’t just leads. It’s being the first name that comes to mind in places where others aren’t showing up at all.

But it also comes with responsibility.

If I’m the only Wisconsin data point someone has, I can’t afford to be vague, salesy, or hard to reach. I have to be worth being the only one—including having a deep referral bench for when big law isn’t the right fit, but the Wisconsin need is real.

I never expected my big law career to run through Milwaukee, the Northwoods, or Wisconsin at all. But that’s the map, and I’ve stopped treating it as a limitation.
