Track it all.
Track it all.
Investment (productive or non-billable) time isn’t just “extra”—it’s essential to building a sustainable, impactful legal career.
Too often, we treat pro bono, mentoring, CLEs, networking, and even admin as afterthoughts, squeezed in around the “real” work.
But, this time (and effort) is critical to moving up in big law.
So, if you’re doing something that moves your practice, your firm, or your career forward, it counts. And it should be tracked.
By track, I mean bill it—enter it in your firm's time-entry software. If your firm doesn't have "non-billable" matter numbers, ask for one. This is critical to showing your all-in investment and how you're productively spending your time outside of billable work.
I log every hour I spend on these "non-billable" things. Why?
Because it matters—to my growth, to my firm’s culture, and to the profession as a whole.
Tracking productive time isn’t just about meeting a requirement; it’s about showing the full value you bring to your career, your community, your team and your clients.
If you’re not already tracking your non-billable time, start now.
I suspect you'll be surprised by how much you're doing to further your career, your colleagues, and your community.
