Competence
"A lawyer must provide competent representation to a client."
The first ethics rule we're all bound by.
And yet:
Competence isn’t just about legal knowledge or technical skill—it’s also about wellbeing.
A lawyer’s ability to serve clients depends on their mental, emotional, and physical health.
When we neglect our wellbeing, we risk our judgment, our diligence, and ultimately, our clients’ trust.
Taking care of yourself isn’t a luxury, and failing to take care of ourselves in pursuit of more hours (or money or whatever it is) is not a badge of honor.
For too long our profession has been one that puts ourselves last.
That'll get you so far, but it won't get you a long, sustainable career.
So, I believe: wellbeing is part of our ethical duty of competence.
Sustainable excellence in law starts with showing up as your best self, for your clients and for your team.
